Predator Scorpion is designed to read license plates of vehicles ahead at long range.

With a modular ALPR system, only the camera unit needs to be exposed, leading to a clean and durable install.

Predator is an open source license plate recognition platform developed by V0LT. Predator Scorpion is a pre-configured kit designed to make it as easy as possible to get your own Predator ALPR system up and running. Predator Scorpion uses a USB camera with an adjustable lens capable of reading license plates from several car-lengths ahead.

Features

Private

Predator is completely private, by nature of being entirely open source. All users are free to inspect and audit the code that powers it. If you've ever worried about your devices doing nefarious things with your information behind the scenes, Predator's trustless design is a great way to improve privacy and security.

Secure

Predator dramatically improves security by off-loading the storage onto a concealed controller. While the camera unit remains exposed on the dashboard, the controller and SD card containing all of your ALPR data can be tucked away in the body of the car to make it extremely difficult for a thief to access the contents of your camera.

Modular

Predator is extremely modular, which makes it easy to replace and upgrade individual components over time. For example, changing your camera is as easy as unplugging the old camera from the controller, plugging in an upgraded model, then choosing that camera in the controller settings. Nearly any generic USB camera will work with Predator.

Customizable

Predator is exceptionally customizable, due in large part to its open source nature. While all common configuration values can be easily modified, users with technical experience can go even deeper, and modify the core system that powers Predator by editing its source code.

Generic

Predator runs on a multi-purpose Linux computer, meaning it's entirely possible for a technically-minded user to run custom software alongside Predator. While this installation kit comes pre-configured as a Predator dashcam system, there's no artificial restrictions on what the hardware can be used for.

Documented

Predator is thoroughly documented, which makes it easy for technical users to repair, modify, upgrade, and troubleshoot their own software/hardware, without being dependent on V0LT.

Functionality

Networking Capable

Predator supports wireless file transfer, without depending on the internet or subscription services of any kind. Nearly any device with a modern web browser should be able to connect to Predator and download ALPR data through the control interface.

GPS Compatible

Predator uses GPS data to geo-tag ALPR data, and automatically synchronize the time offline.

Completely Offline

Unlike other embedded ALPR systems, Predator is capable of operating entirely offline. All processing is done locally, and results are fully under the user's control.

Disclaimers

Mounting

ALPR using intense zoom settings with a tight field of view is extremely suceptible to poor mounting. Before finalizing your install, ensure the camera has a clear and level view of the vehicles ahead. Predator Scorpion includes convenient mounting hardware to make this process as straight-forward as possible.

Dashcam

While Predator is capable of dash-cam video recording, this particular kit does not have the processing power necessary to record video at a full 30fps. Video recording is possible, but you should expect lower frame-rate. For hardware better suited to dash-cam recording, see Predator Owl.

Stability

Predator is a complex mix of various different components. As such, it's worth conducting regular checks after installation to ensure everything is working as expected. If you encouter an issue, be sure to reach out to V0LT directly for one-on-one support to resolve the problem!

Tools

The process of installing Predator Scorpion requires basic tools like wire strippers and crimp connectors, as well as tools for removing vehicle body panels. The setup process also recommends a laptop with a USB port to temporarily preview the camera for sake of mounting alignment.

Headless

Predator is designed to be tightly integrated with your car. As such, none of the kits below come with a display. The built-in web interface allows you to make configuration changes or offload data from your camera. Alternatively, the SD card can be removed from the controller for direct access.

Warranty

While all packages come with one-on-one technical support, V0LT does not provide an extended warranty. Repairs, replacements, and returns are handled on a case-by-case basis.
