Assassin supports a wide gamut of alerts, and can be customized for maximum sensitivity, minimal distraction, or somewhere in between.

Note

This webpage is for Asssassin installation services, not the Assassin software itself. Assassin is completely free and open source. If you'd like to configure, assemble, and install your own Assassin system, you can find downloads here. If you want to have a customized system installed for you, then you're in the right place!

Description

While technology has undoubtedly made our lives easier and more conveinent, it has also introduced new threats to privacy, security, and safety. Assassin is designed to be a defense system for driving in the modern world. As you drive, Assassin works in the background, displaying information like an extension of the dashboard in your car. When a potential threat is detected, an alert is displayed, notifying the driver of the situation.

Assassin is a highly customizable and extensible system. At a basic level, it can display information like speed, direction of travel, and location. However, it goes far beyond a basic information display. Using a local, offline database, alerts can be displayed for fixed speed cameras, red-light cameras, and automatic license plate recogntion cameras. Assassin can also interface with on-board sensors in real-time to provide alerts for aircraft threats, autonomous drone hazards, and Bluetooth tracking devices. The system is also capable of notifying the driver when they've been actively driving for a certain period of time, and should take a break. When connected to the internet, Assassin can fetch weather information, and provide alerts for potentially hazardous weather.

Features

Offline

Assassin is capable of operating completely offline, and all internet-dependent features are entirely optional.

Upgradable

A integrated Assassin installation from V0LT makes it easy and affordable to install additional hardware, even if you do it yourself.

Integrated

An Assassin system installed by V0LT can be completely integrated with your car, making it practically invisible to anyone who doesn't know it's there.

Servicable

Like all other V0LT installations, an integrated Assassin installation is designed to be easy and straight-forward to maintain and repair.

Private

A system that tracks and monitors your car using various sensors needs to be as private as possible. Assassin is completely open source, and doesn't feed any information to any external services unless explicitly configured to do so.

Failsafe

Assassin is designed to be fail-safe both in software and hardware. Should things go wrong, Assassin is designed to make it clear there's a problem, and make it as easy as possible to fix.

Disclaimers

Certain features of Assassin have questionable legality in a few specific jurisdictions. If you live and drive anywhere in the United States, you're almost certainly in the clear, but it's still worth confirming with your local laws, especially if you plan to use Assassin in other countries.

While Assassin is designed to detect and mitigate several kinds of hazards while driving, it is not infallible. Just like with any other counter-measure system, false-positive and false-negative alerts may occur.

Processor

At its core, Assassin needs a processing device to receive information, handle input, and issue alerts.

    • If you've already had an integrated computer installed, you may be able to have Assassin installed on the existing hardware you have.

    • The AML-S905X-CC is a compact, basic processing device that has enough power to keep up with really anything Assassin needs.

    • The Raspberry Pi 5 is a powerful, yet compact single board computer.
    • If you'd like a processing device that can handle Assassin, in addition to other programs, this option will give you the extra power you need.

Router

An integrated Assassin system depends on a router to allow devices in the car to connect to Assassin.

    • If your car already has a router with both wireless and wired networking capabilities, it's likely you'll be able to use it with Assassin.

    • Assuming you've chosen the Raspberry Pi 5 as your processor, it's possible to configure the process to function as its own router.
    • If you don't intend on adding additional network devices to your car, this is a great affordable option.

    • The SFT1200 is a compact, feature rich travel router.
    • While an internet connection is not necessary for Assassin to run, this router supports WiFi pass through, cell phone tethering, and external cell antennas to make optional software updates as quick and easy as possible.
    • Regardless of your future plans, this router will almost certainly be able to handle whatever you throw at it.

GPS

Nearly all of Assassin's functionality depends on a GPS.

    • This is a cheap, reliable GPS unit that is accurate enough to allow Assassin to work reliably and predictably.
    • For ideal peformance, this GPS should be placed outside the car. However, it can also be mounted internally if desired.

Tapping

An Assassin system is tapped into your car's electrical system to receive power.

    • If you've previously had electronics installed by V0LT, and you opted to have a fuse box or power distribution block installed, the existing tap can be used.

    • This option is a basic, no frills fuse tap that is simple, reliable, and effective.
    • If you want an affordable, reliable tapping method, this is a great option.

    • This option uses the same tapping method as the standard tap, but adds a compact power distribution block to make repairs and future installations easier.
    • If you don't know what option will work best for you, this is a great compromise option.

    • This option uses the same tapping method as the standard tap, but adds a full aftermarket fuse box to allow multiple devices to be neatly connected to your car's electrical system.
    • If you plan to install additional electronics in the future, this is a great option that will save money and time in the long run.

Power

The devices that make up an Assassin system run on 5 volts, while almost all cars use a 12 volt electrical system. Here you'll decide how you want your Assassin system to be powered.

    • If you just want to get Assassin up and running for as cheap as possible, you can simply have your Assassin system plugged into two existing USB ports.
    • This installation method does not conceal the internals of the system, nor does it guarantee stable power delivery.

    • This is a simple 12V to 5V power supply, which should work well for hard-wired installations.

Functions

Assassin is capable of interfacing with a wide array of devices to enable different features and functions. Here you can chose what Assassin functions you want your system to support. While these functions can be added in the future after your system is installed, the most time and cost effective time to install them is during the initial installation.

    • For this feature, Assassin times how long the driver has been active without resting. If a certain threshold is broken, the driver is reminded to take a break.
    • The attention monitoring system uses GPS location information to determine when the driver has taken a break, or the driver has switched.
    • All attributes and thresholds of this feature are configurable, and the feature as a whole can be toggled on and off as desired.

    • This allows Assassin to alert the driver of fixed speed and red-light enforcement cameras, regardless of type.
    • This feature uses an offline database, and covers the vast majority of speed cameras in use.

    • This allows Assassin to notify the driver of upcoming automatic license plate recognition cameras. These cameras pose a privacy concern for many drivers, since they allow governments to automatically track the movements of citizens without warrants or other oversight.
    • This feature uses an incomplete, but rapidly growing offline database of ALPR cameras.

    • This allows Assassin to detect aircraft over ADS-B, and issue alerts for planes that may be running aerial traffic enforcement.
    • This feature requires placing a ~10inch antenna somewhere on the exterior of the car.

    • This integrates Assassin with V0LT Predator to provide license plate recognition alerts.
    • This includes a camera, which must be located somewhere with clear view of license plates.

    • This feature issues alerts based on potentially hazardous weather, include temperature and visibility.
    • Unlike other features, this feature requires an internet connection, and a free account needs to be created with a weather service.
    • By default, weather information is only updated every few minutes. For more precise, up to date information, a paid subscription through a third party may be required to avoid reaching the monthly limit on requests.

    • This allows Assassin to notify the driver of nearby drones and autonomous devices from companies like DJI Technology, Parrot, Gatso, and Redflex.
    • This function uses a 2.4GHz/5GHz wireless adapter, and listens for packets from devices registered by companies of concern.
    • This feature is highly experimental. It works reliably in testing, but results in the real world could vary significantly.
