Distribution Review: Manjaro

Manjaro is an Arch based distro geared towards more technical users. While those with less Linux experience may want to look into an alternative distro, they likely won't have too many issues if they choose to use Manjaro. Manjaro is often credited with brining Arch Linux to the masses, since it removes many of the technical hurdles preventing more casual users from installing the system.

Manjaro comes in various flavors, each with a different desktop environment. This makes it much easier for users to use the desktop environment of their choice, without having to jump through the hoops of installing it themselves. However, for users who care about having full control, Manjaro also comes with an "Architect" edition, which allows for complete customization through a command line installation interface.

Quick Information:
Who's it for: Typical users looking for a more technical experience
Price: $0
Current version: 20.0.3
Website: https://manjaro.org/
Company owned: No
Basis: Arch > Manjaro

Distribution Review: Ubuntu

Ubuntu is by far one of the most popular desktop Linux distributions. If someone says that they use Linux, there's a very good chance that they run Ubuntu. While past concerns of privacy may be off-putting to some, the level of privacy is still drastically greater than what mainstream proprietary OS's like Windows, and even macOS to a degree, provide. However, if you're concerned about privacy, you might want to consider an alternative distribution.

Ubuntu is based on Debian, but is heavily modified. On the flip side, Ubuntu is the basis for several other linux distros, including Zorin OS, Pop!_OS, and elementaryOS. Ubuntu also comes in various 'flavors' in case the main-line Ubuntu doesn't fit your needs. For examples, Kubuntu uses the KDE environment, Lubuntu is built to be light weight and run on slower hardware, Xubuntu is built to be elegant and easy to use!

Quick Information:
Who's it for: General users, developers, administrators
Price: $0
Current version: 19.10
Website: https://ubuntu.com/
Company owned: Yes (Canonical)
Basis: Debian > Ubuntu

Distribution Review: Zorin OS Ultimate

Zorin OS Ultimate is a Linux distribution designed with replacing macOS or Windows. Users can choose whether or not to use a UI layout resembling Windows, macOS, or something more traditional to Linux. An option to use an interface more suitable for touch screens is also available. Zorin OS advertises itself as being reliable, virus resistant, privacy respecting, and stable even on older hardware. One thing that sets Zorin OS Ultimate apart from other Linux distros is its price. While there is a free version simply called Zorin OS, to get all feature and support development, users can pay to access Zorin OS Ultimate, allowing them to access all premium UI layouts, installation support. The Ultimate version also comes with several curated apps and games, thought these are optional.

Overall, Zorin OS Ultimate is a very interesting Linux distribution. With marketing similar to Apple, its goal appears to be to bring Linux to the masses, with a structure that most computer users are familiar with, while still providing the freedom and customizability of Linux. If you're a typical computer user, and are looking for something powerful, but not too advanced, Zorin OS is definitely a contender to check out! While the Ultimate version is available, the free Zorin OS Core is in no way restricted or held back.

Quick Information:
Who's it for: Moderate computer users
Price: $39
Current version: 15.2
Website: https://zorinos.com/
Company owned: Yes (Zorin Group)
Basis: Debian > Ubuntu > Zorin OS

Distribution Review: Pop!_OS

Pop!_OS is a very powerful Linux distribution created by System76. Pop!_OS is designed for those who use their computer "as a tool to discover and create". It's geared towards technical users, but holds a good balance between power and simplicity. While the average computer user would have no trouble finding their way around, more technical users won't find themselves feeling limited by the OS.

Pop!_OS comes as the default operating system for all of System76's machines. This means that Pop!_OS has fantastic hardware integration, and high quality support. Despite being designed with specific hardware in mind, Pop!_OS will run just fine with most other hardware, just like other Linux distributions. If you do happen to encounter a problem, Pop!_OS's heavy basis on Ubuntu means that you can use Ubuntu's great support community to solve your issues!.

Quick Information:
Who's it for: Power users, creators, artists, and developers
Price: $0
Current version: 19.10
Website: https://system76.com/pop
Company owned: Yes (System76)
Basis: Debian > Ubuntu > Pop!_OS

Distribution Review: elementaryOS

elementaryOS is very unique when it comes to Linux distros. Linux is typically centered around freedom and customizability. However, elementaryOS focuses on simplicity and easy of use! While technical users might dislike this, it offers a great starting point for less experienced users who want an alternative to macOS or Windows. ElementaryOS is free, but accepts donations to support development.

The elementaryOS interface is heavily resemblant of macOS, and appears very polished and modern. The AppCenter makes it extremely easy to install programs. It also improves security, since apps are curated and reviewed by the Elementary team, and all the apps are open source.

Quick Information:
Who's it for: Inexperienced or minimalistic users
Price: $0
Current version: 5.1 Hera
Website: https://elementary.io/
Company owned: Yes (elementary Inc)
Basis: Debian > Ubuntu > elementaryOS
